Environmental Controls

Environmental controls assist individuals with physical disabilities to manipulate objects they interact with during their normal daily activities. This can include lights, radio, television, telephone, doors, and other items. These controls are not usually covered by standard insurance, but could be considered through alternative funding sources.

One of the least costly environmental controls available is to add infrared controls to a power wheelchair. These systems use programming and power from the wheelchair to operate devices remotely. Most wheelchair manufacturers have modules available which can be added after the chair has been delivered to the customer. However, keep in mind that if you are interested in environmental controls, it is much easier to build this into a wheelchair at the time that it is ordered. There is no guarantee that your chair will allow these modifications if it is not requested initially.

Any electronic device and some manual ones can be controlled through systems that are commercially available or that can be customized. Hardwired equipment offers more reliability, but less portability, than infrared, voice activated or other remote systems.
